Stübing Open-Air Museum
The Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing invites you on a relaxed and entertaining walk in the footsteps of our ancestors. While older visitors reminisce, children marvel at the tools and ways of life from days gone by.
With over 100 historic buildings, the Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Here, you immerse yourself in a bygone world of rural life and work that continues to live on in a peaceful side valley of the Mur River. Strolling along cozy paths, you travel across Austria and learn a lot about the history and regionally typical construction and living styles of our ancestors.
From charcoal kilns to wine presses, from the sgraffito-decorated four-sided farmstead from Upper Austria to the post-barn from Tyrol—the museum is full of surprises. The impressive buildings and tools testify to the ingenuity of our ancestors, who combined functionality with aesthetics.
The Open-Air Museum Stübing was founded in 1962 by Graz humanities professor Viktor Herbert Pöttler, with support from the federal government and all Austrian states. Over decades of work, Professor Pöttler collected regional residential and agricultural buildings, which were dismantled at their original locations and rebuilt in Stübing using traditional methods. Today, around 100 objects blend harmoniously into the 60-hectare valley.
The museum is anything but boring. From straw-thatched farmhouses to alpine huts from Vorarlberg—the fully furnished rooms are equipped with original household items and tools. Colorful garden flowers decorate the tables, and sheep and goats graze in the meadows. Visitors can watch craftsmen such as carvers, basket weavers, and spinners at work.
History here is conveyed in an exciting and interactive way. Children can dive into the life and work of the past and participate in varied activities like “hobby horses and hay work,” interactive stations, and summer holiday weeks.
The museum offers a diverse program of events and educational activities aligned with the rural festivals throughout the year. Visitors can try traditional crafts such as making shingles, baking bread, carving spoons, or spinning.
Hunger and thirst stand no chance here. The historic inn “Zum Göller” serves typical dishes from Styria and the Austrian states, prepared as in the old days—without ready-made products, in a cozy atmosphere.
The Austrian Open-Air Museum Stübing is a place full of life, history, and tradition—ideal for families and anyone wishing to take a glimpse into the past.
