Schüsserlbrunn Pilgrimage Church
Schüsserlbrunn is a well-visited pilgrimage church located on the “Lantschmauer” at the foot of Hochlantsch, the highest mountain in the region. This charming wooden chapel at 1,363 meters above sea level is accessible only on foot.
The church is open during masses from May to October; otherwise, it remains closed year-round. However, visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and the impressive surroundings at any time.
The name “Schüsserlbrunn” comes from a healing spring that flows from the rock face and collects in small “rock bowls.” This spring is believed to have healing properties, especially for eye ailments, and is surrounded by many myths and legends.
Several times a year, mainly on Marian feast days, services are held in the chapel. Schüsserlbrunn remains a popular destination for pilgrimage groups. Access is via 198 steps from the inn “Steirischer Jockl,” a popular rest stop offering breathtaking views.
The pilgrimage church is accessible via several hiking trails:
– Hochlantsch Loop: Circular trail from Teichalm, 15 km / 550 m ascent
– Through the Bärenschützklamm: Starting point Breitenau or Mixnitz, approximately 25 km / 1,345 m ascent
– Pfarrer Kelz Pilgrimage Trail: Starting at the St. Erhard pilgrimage church in Breitenau, approximately 12 km / 732 m ascent
Schüsserlbrunn offers both spiritual retreat and impressive nature experiences, making it a worthwhile destination for those with good mobility.
