The Bärenschützklamm is classified as a black mountain hiking trail and places high demands on surefootedness, a head for heights, and physical fitness. Each visitor hikes at their own risk and should realistically assess their physical condition – the trail leads through alpine terrain, including numerous footbridges and ladders.

For safety reasons, the gorge can only be hiked in one direction: uphill from the ticket hut in Mixnitz to the Guten Hirten hut.

How long does the hike through the Bärenschützklamm take?

The hike through the Bärenschützklamm takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on your fitness level and break times. From the parking area to the entrance of the gorge takes about one hour, followed by the “Gute Hirte” hut (another hour), the “Steirischer Jockl” (40 minutes), and finally the Hochlantsch summit (one more hour).

What equipment is needed for the hike?

For the hike through the Bärenschützklamm, you’ll need gear suitable for alpine terrain, sturdy footwear, good physical condition, and no fear of heights. Hiking poles and weatherproof clothing are also recommended.

Is the Bärenschützklamm suitable for children?

The Bärenschützklamm is suitable for older children who are surefooted and not afraid of heights. Younger children should always be accompanied by adults, and the hike should only be undertaken in safe weather conditions.

Can I bring my dog into the Bärenschützklamm?

Dogs are allowed in the area surrounding the Bärenschützklamm, but the gorge itself is not suitable for dogs. Please keep your dog on a leash outside the gorge, make sure to bring enough water, and plan for regular breaks.

What are the opening hours of the Bärenschützklamm?

The Bärenschützklamm is open daily from May 1 to October 31, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Please check the homepage for current updates and possible changes.

Are there guided tours through the Bärenschützklamm?

Currently, there are no regular guided tours through the Bärenschützklamm. It is recommended to gather information in advance and, if needed, contact an experienced hiking guide.

What’s the best way to get to the Bärenschützklamm?

Die Bärenschützklamm ist von Graz aus in etwa 40 Minuten bequem per Bahn erreichbar. Vom Bahnhof Mixnitz/Bärenschützklamm sind es etwa 30 Minuten Fußweg bis zum Parkplatz, von dem aus der Wanderweg zur Klamm beginnt. Es stehen auch Parkplätze für Autofahrer zur Verfügung. Diese werden von der Gemeinde Pernegg betrieben.
