The Dragon Cave is a site of prehistoric significance, known for its diverse bat population and the fascinating legends surrounding it. The cave can only be visited from May to the end of September as part of guided tours, and registration is mandatory.
Through the impressive portal of the Dragon Cave, located about 500 meters above Mixnitz on the western slope of the Röthelstein, you enter the mountain. Around 50,000 years ago, the cave served as a refuge for humans from bears and wolves.
The hike to the official entrance of the cave takes about 1.5 hours and becomes increasingly steep. The ascent is worthwhile to learn about the origin of the "Dragon Legend." The cave got its name from fossilized bones of the extinct cave bear.
Trained cave guides accompany visitors through the cave, which is a protected natural monument and one of the most important bat habitats in Austria.
For ecological reasons, visits to the Dragon Cave are only permitted as part of guided tours. These take place from May to October to protect the sensitive bat population.
