Lurgrotte Peggau

The Lurgrotte in Peggau is a true natural wonder, where impressive limestone sculptures have formed over millions of years. With its dripstone-adorned halls, rock domes, grottos, and gorges, it is Austria’s largest and most beautiful water-filled show cave.

Located just about 25 km north of Graz, the entrances at Peggau and Semriach offer breathtaking glimpses into this mystical underground world. Since a flood in 1975 destroyed the connecting path between the two entrances, it is no longer accessible for safety reasons.

The Lurbach stream flows through the cave and reemerges in Peggau. From here, visitors can reach the illuminated Rain Grotto and the impressive “Prinz.” Finds show that the cave’s antechambers once provided shelter for cave bears and, about 50,000 years ago, even Neanderthals. The constant temperature of +10°C and high humidity of 97–98% create a unique microclimate that is especially beneficial for the respiratory system.

During thunderstorms, water levels in the cave can rise rapidly, but a modern warning system now ensures safety. In 1894, seven cave explorers were trapped by sudden flooding and were rescued only after nine days.

The Lurgrotte can only be visited on guided tours. These tours, which venture about 2 kilometers deep into the mountain, run hourly during the summer months and start with a minimum of two participants. No prior registration is necessary. Due to the cave’s protected status, individual visits are not allowed to prevent vandalism.

A special highlight is the “Delicious Lurgrotte” event in Peggau, where underground adventure meets culinary delight. Cave guides and Philipp Pirstinger, an experienced chef and wine sommelier, lead visitors through the cave and serve an exclusive nine-course menu inspired by the impressive dripstone formations. These unique events sell out quickly, so early reservation is recommended.

The Lurgrotte offers a fascinating blend of natural wonders and culinary experiences, making it an unforgettable destination for visitors.
